Losing Weight Over 40 - Years and Pounds

Weightloss Exercises

Weightloss exercises come in all shapes and sizes (so to speak).  Anything that gets you moving and/or strengthening muscle is ultimately a weightloss exercise!

You can exercise to lose weight just about anywhere.  You can go to a gym, exercise in your home, take a class or out in the great outdoors.

There are even exercises that you can do when traveling!

Cardio / Aerobic Exercises to Lose Weight

These are what most people think about when they hear exercising to lose weight.

Weightloss Exercise on a TreadmillAerobic exercise certainly burns calories faster, in a shorter period of time.  Cardio exercises also have the added benefit of strengthening your heart muscles -- a very good thing!

Just about any routine can become aerobic, if you can get your heart rate up and keep it up for the appropriate length of time.

Typical cardio / aerobic exercises include:

  • Walking or jogging

  • Exercise equipment (treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike)

  • Bicycling

  • Swimming

  • Aerobic / step classes

Some aerobic exercises you might not think about immediately include:

  • Skating (roller or ice)

  • Dancing (class, video routine or just in your living room)

  • Strength training / weights (many light reps done quickly)

  • Water aerobics

Weightloss Exercises -- Toning and Strengthening

Yes, toning and strengthening your muscles does help you to lose weight, in two ways.

First, you burn calories just doing the exercises.  True, you burn them more slowly than with aerobic, but they still count.

Second, when you are doing anything to improve your muscles, you end up burning extra calories to maintain that improvement.

Exercising - Just Do It!

Ideally, you should do both aerobic and strength/toning exercises each week, three times each.

You can do a lot of these exercises right at home, too.

However, if your are not used to exercising, please take it slowly!  It doesn't do you any good to hurt yourself so that you have to quit exercising until you heal!   That just counteracts any weightloss benefits.

Try a Class or a Video for Your Weightloss Exercising

When you are first starting out with exercising after being out of it for several years, taking a class or booking a lesson with a personal trainer is best.

By seeing what the instructor does, and then having him or her watch you, you can be sure of learning to do the exercises properly.

No personal trainer or classes near you? Your next best bet is getting an exercise video or exercise DVD.  You can see the instructor doing the moves properly.

If you have a friend who can spot you, they can make sure you are doing it correctly.

No spotter available?  Try doing the exercises at least once in front of a mirror, to make sure your posture and form is correct.
