High Protein Diet Plan

So many people link a high protein diet plan with the Atkins diet plan. In reality, they are not the same -- at least, not today's menus.

A diet high in protein is great for quick weight loss, but keep this in mind -- it's not right for everyone.

If you have a health condition that requires you to restrict proteins, please follow your physician's advice.

All others -- read on!

What's It Like?

High protein diets got a bad rap with the Atkins diet menu. While Atkins was high in protein, it was also very high in fats. Furthermore, Atkins restricted carbs of all sorts, including good (low glycemic) carbohydrates. Not exactly a well-balanced diet!

A diet that also gave high protein a bad name is the 3 day tuna diet -- originally for body-builders bulking up, it was unhealthy, to say the least. (Here's a modified 3 day tuna diet that's much healthier.)

Today's high protein diet plan allows for a good amount of fresh vegetables, low-glycemic fruits and heart-healthy fats. You aren't severely restricting any food group, with the exception of sugars and highly refined foods (white bread, white rice, pasta, etc.)

A Bariatric Diet Uses It

When you undergo weight loss (bariatric) surgery, you'll be following a very different diet from what you're eating today. In fact, it's a high protein diet plan!

In essence, it's all about restricting sugars and highly refined foods, limiting fats and increasing protein in your everyday eating plan. Think of it as a diet within a diet, considering the frequent small meals.

Here's more information about a bariatric diet, and if you should consider it (even if you don't plan on the surgery). If nothing else, it might be an eye-opener.

Where Can You Find a High Protein Diet Plan?

There are plenty of high protein plans around, one of which is South Beach. Take a look at their frozen dinners, and you'll get a good idea of how they break out as far as proportions of fats to carbs to proteins. Of course, you could also read the book or even use their online resources.

You can also convert a medium-protein plan like the Sonoma Diet to higher levels by making slightly different choices. Read labels and choose items judiciously. For example, I've compared different brands of string cheese and you'd be surprised at the differences. Choose the one with the highest allotment!

Another way to increase the amount of protein is to investigate adding whey to your smoothies. OnWhey has the highest amounts of protein per serving that I've been able to find (24g per serving), and one smoothie can make for a great meal!

A high protein diet can be a great way to quickly lose weight; however you must remember that all the food groups are needed in a healthy weight loss plan. Don't eat protein and exclude other categories!
